9 New Songs You Should Hear Now
  + stars: | 2024-02-20 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Dear listeners,Though we’re still less than two months into 2024, it already feels like it’s going to be a busy year in the music world. For today’s Amplifier, I’m highlighting nine others who have recently released songs worth your time. Sure, there are a few names you’ll recognize (I hear this guy Usher just played a pretty high-profile gig), but hopefully some will be new to you. Many of these picks are culled from the Playlist, a weekly collection of new songs selected by our critics, but a few of them (by the prolific rocker David Nance and the mystical folk singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt) are songs I meant to include on the Playlist. Listen to this playlist to see (hear?)

LOISABA CONSERVANCY, Kenya (AP) — Conservationists in Kenya are celebrating as rhinos were returned to a grassy plateau that hasn't seen them in decades. The rhinos were taken from three parks that are becoming overcrowded to the private Loisaba Conservancy, where herds were wiped out by poaching decades ago. Kenya now has around 1,000 black rhinos, the third biggest population behind South Africa and Namibia. There are just over 6,400 wild black rhinos left in the world, all of them in Africa, according to the Save the Rhino organization. Tom Silvester, the CEO of Loisaba Conservancy, said Kenya's plan is to get its black rhino numbers to 2,000 over the next decade.

‘One Day’ Is Back. This Time, It’s Longer.

For the British author David Nicholls, the key to a good romantic story is avoiding the clichés. “The first kiss, the first night together, the wedding day. There are all these landmarks which are quite familiar and quite obvious,” he said recently. Instead, his 2009 novel “One Day” follows its two protagonists, Emma and Dexter, on the same day each year for two decades, as they weave in and out of each other’s lives as friends, partners and everything in between. What has happened on the previous 364 days is revealed slowly and indirectly, with many key moments left to the reader’s imagination.

Still, the question remains: Does cannabis truly cause psychosis and related diseases such as schizophrenia — or is this another overblown claim? It is especially important for us, as doctors, to untangle whether cannabis actually causes psychosis. Still, of all the drugs associated with this uncommon kind of psychosis, cannabis is the most common culprit. CBD products should only be purchased from reputable companies that test their products through independent labs and share the results. We shouldn’t jump to the conclusion that cannabis causes psychosis, but anyone who plans to use cannabis should know their personal risk factors and exercise caution accordingly.

Markets are confused over the odds of a U.S. recession, and "somebody has got it wrong," according to hedge fund manager David Neuhauser. Except I think that [the] forward path — are we going to see things start to fall off a cliff? Or are we going to, sort of, glide path down and corporate earnings are going to be sheltered from the storm?" "That's the thing, I think, people don't have a really good understanding of today, but they're believing that that's going to happen — that's the narrative." "When you look at the oil … and you look at the gold market, that's telling you recession is in the front," he said.

Most of the time, however, mergers that seem bad really are bad. It is in neither the investors’ nor JetBlue’s management’s interests to pick a fight with the big guys. There was a time, back at the turn of the century, when JetBlue was a genuinely innovative airline. In 2014, Wall Street analysts turned on JetBlue and its chief executive at the time, Mr. Barger, accusing the company of being too consumer-focused. Unfortunately for customers, Wall Street won, Mr. Barger was thrown out and JetBlue started charging fees for all sorts of things.

An appeals court upheld the disorderly conduct convictions Friday of actor Jussie Smollett, who was accused of staging a racist, homophobic attack against himself in 2019 and lying about it to Chicago police. Smollett, who appeared in the TV show “Empire,” challenged the role of a special prosecutor, jury selection, evidence and many other aspects of the case. But all were turned aside in a 2-1 opinion from the Illinois Appellate Court. “We are preparing to escalate this matter to the Supreme Court,” Smollett spokeswoman Holly Baird said, referring to Illinois' highest court and also noting that the opinion at the appellate court wasn't unanimous. ___More AP coverage of the Jussie Smollett case: https://apnews.com/hub/jussie-smollett

Australia's electricity transmission network, batteries and sustainable aviation fuel are three areas where simplified planning, subsidised finance and other regulatory changes could catalyse investment, according to a report released by eight major pension funds. Changes could quickly unlock A$4 billion ($2.7 billion) worth of investment in batteries, the report said. Once passive managers who predominantly invested at home, Australian pension funds have become international heavyweights, managing A$2.4 trillion - the fourth largest pool of retirement savings by country globally. William M. Casey, a former New York City deputy police chief who was the unheralded hero of the “Dirty 30” corruption investigation that ensnared one-sixth of the officers assigned to a West Harlem precinct, died on Nov. 9 at his home in Pleasantville, N.Y. The cause was complications of a stroke and Parkinson’s disease, his daughter, Kimberly Wildey, said. The scandal — often described as the largest police corruption case involving a single precinct in the department’s history — was uncovered by a commission on police corruption appointed by Mayor David N. Dinkins in 1992 and headed by Justice Milton Mollen of the New York State Supreme Court. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York under Mary Jo White. The operation resulted in charges against 34 officers, 30 of whom were either convicted or pleaded guilty to crimes ranging from perjury and civil rights violations to stealing drugs or cash from narcotics dealers.

Veterinary laboratories in several states are investigating an unusual respiratory illness in dogs, and encouraging people to take basic precautions to keep their pets healthy as veterinarians try to pin down what's making the animals sick. Oregon, Colorado and New Hampshire are among the states that have seen cases of the illness, which has caused lasting respiratory disease and pneumonia and does not respond to antibiotics. Symptoms of respiratory illness in dogs include coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge and lethargy. Some cases of the pneunomia progress quickly, making dogs very sick within 24 to 36 hours. Dogs have died, said Kurt Williams, director of the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University.

The new Bed Bath & Beyond announced Monday its CEO, Jonathan Johnson, is immediately stepping down from his position just days after activist hedge fund JAT Capital called for his ouster. He led the company through its acquisition of Bed Bath & Beyond earlier this year and its corporate name change to Beyond Inc. , which took effect Monday. David Nielsen, Beyond's president and a former Payless ShoeSource executive, has taken over as interim CEO while the board undergoes a search for a permanent candidate. Beyond said Johnson's departure "follows mutual agreement" between him and the board to transition the company to new leadership, but the move came on suddenly. The company and Johnson didn't immediately return a request for comment seeking additional information.

By Nov. 7, my fellow Ohioans will cast votes on Issue 1, a ballot initiative that would secure access to reproductive health care, including abortion. It is the only statewide election specifically about reproductive rights in 2023. I’m on the committee that helped draft the language for the proposed amendment: It is short (just over 200 words), easy to understand and written to specifically reflect the beliefs of our state. Instead, voters will see an unnecessary and biased summary of the proposed amendment. The clear lesson from 2022, when six states cast votes for reproductive rights, as well as the results of the recent Wisconsin Supreme Court race, is that voters vote in favor of abortion rights.

A Drouot employee poses with the painting "Les Saules, Giverny, 1886" (The Willows, Giverny), by painter Claude Monet (1840-1926) ahead of its auction at Drouot auction house in Paris, France, November 3, 2023. The landscape "Les Saules, Giverny" ("The Willows, Giverny"), dating from 1886, is reappearing on the French art market, where Monet’s paintings have become increasingly rare. "Paintings of Claude Monet of this scale, of this dimension no longer really exist among French families. Though not as famous as Monet's water lilies or the Gare Saint Lazare paintings, which can command prices reaching 100 million euros, "Les Saules, Giverny" bears the artist's trademark style. "It's an oeuvre typical of Claude Monet, notably by the brush strokes and how he makes the light come out," Nordmann said.

The hedge fund manager named French fashion house Louis Vuitton and Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari as the "best and brightest of the market." Although high rates mean banks earn more interest from borrowers, they can also mean higher loan losses as customers struggle with the economic environment. The U.S. Federal Reserve put a pause on hikes in September, after raising rates to a 22-year high. "Banks I think are just still going to be in for a world of hurt on a go-forward basis," the hedge fund manager said.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — King Charles III has expressed “greatest sorrow and the deepest regret” for the “abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence” committed against Kenyans as they sought independence, during a speech on his first day of a four-day visit. The king and Queen Camilla touched down in the capital, Nairobi, late Monday. Another group of protesters briefly chanted anti-British songs and threw roses at the foot of a monument to Mau Mau veteran Dedan Kimathi in Nairobi's central business district on Tuesday. “Just because the king is in Kenya, police have denied us our constitutional right to protest peacefully,” Juliet Wanjira, one of the organizers, said. During his visit, Britain announced 4.5 million pounds ($5.5 million) in new funding to support education reforms in Kenya.

An intensifying bond rout is piling pressure on the global economy and creating a "tremendously dangerous" outlook for equities, the chief investment officer of Livermore Partners hedge fund said Friday. Bond yields move inversely to prices. That, in turn, has pushed bond yields higher and sapped money from government budgets by raising borrowing costs. In Germany, Europe's largest economy, yields have hit their highest level since the 2011 euro zone debt crisis. "I think that is going to cause a lot of pain moving forward in terms of the economy," Neuhauser said.
